HAPPINESS...Back to basics

I have recently come across this book about happiness that I want to share with you. I am up for the total well being of an individual and I have shared with you in my latest blog about the benefits of happiness in our lives and we must pursue it at all cost, but we often neglect the basics.

Where should we start?

OUR LIFESTYLE

There are scientific studies that a healthy diet, exercise and plenty of really good- quality sleep can really boost our mood, make us more optimistic and thus make us feel happier, but these are the basic things that we normally neglect.

FOODS THAT HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON ONES MOOD AND WELL BEING
1
CHOOSE WHOLE WHEAT BREAD, PASTA AND RICE – Base your meals around starchy foods because they are a great source of energy especially the whole wheat or whole grain ones, they are rich in fibre, calcium, iron and B vitamins

2.     EAT LOTS OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES- I practice being vegetarian, but I do splurge once a week on meat or fish (mostly fish) if I have cravings for it. But nutritionist recommends eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

3.     EAT MORE FISH- Fish contains lots of protein, minerals and vitamins and keeps our heart healthy.  Aim to eat fish at least twice a week; the recommended ones are the salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, fresh tuna (not canned), sardines, pilchards and eels.

4.     EAT LOW FAT CHEESES AND YOGURT- Be like the French, they love these stuff. But they don’t just stick to low fat cheeses but they love the high fat cheeses as well. Even I am guilty of that.

FRENCH BRED...LOL

5.     DRIED FRUIT AND UNSALTED NUTS FOR YOUR SNACKS

6.     DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, FRESH FRUIT JUICE AND FRUIT TEAS (BUT NOT THE SUGARY ONES)

7.     LOVE YOUR COFFEE BUT DON’T OVERDO THE CAFFEINE- Coffee can be a great source of pleasure. I, for one have a great love for coffee but sometimes I drink more than what’s recommended. But drinking more than 2 cups of coffee can raise blood pressure, trigger feelings of anxiety or irritation and interfere sleep, all of which can have a negative effect on ones happiness. Caffeine can also be found in colas, teas and energy drinks that can have an equal negative effect if we overdo it.

8.     WATCH ALCOHOL INTAKE- Women shouldn’t drink 2-3 units of alcohol per day. For men the limit is 3-4 units a day. Drinking more than this on a regular basis can lead to serious health problems

9.     DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST- Skipping breakfast might seem a sensible technique for slimming down but usually has an opposite effect. Usually we crave for some sweet tasty snack of pastries, chocolate or biscuit midway through the morning. Eat regular meals including a nutritious breakfast like whole grain cereals and fruits to stave off the snack attack!

FOODS TO AVOID

Crisps (lays only) LOL

Biscuits

Ready meals (crew meals) LOL

Sweets

Chocolate (Patchi)

Red meat

Cured meats and sausages

Full fat cheese

Fried food

Alcohol and fizzy drinks
